Forget Spring – polar bears are in the air.
The fifth annual Polar Bear Gala will be held next month, and organizers are confident that it will be the best one yet.
“We have a few new features this year, so we are really excited,” says Dean Breathat, who has been the lead planner since the gala’s inception.
“And we really did listen to our guests last year. This time we will have more food and less talking,” he adds with a laugh.
The original Polar Bear Gala was launched as a fundraiser to help give the then-struggling Polar Bear Habitat a financial boost. Now that the Habitat has become more established in the world of research, proceeds from the event will help advance its science facilities.
“Our community is so generous. We are blown away year after year with the support we receive at the gala,” says Breathat.
Last year’s event drew in more than $18,000, and this year’s goal is $20,000. Those funds come from ticket and beverage sales, live and silent auctions, as well as other opportunities to donate.
For the first time this year, the event will feature a photobooth as well as team trivia, and volunteers are developing a few more additions, too. Attendees will enjoy live piano music during a meal catered by Soup! There It Is, with a DJ providing favourite songs for the dance afterwards. Breathat says the gala will be a great opportunity for local networking, team-building, or just a great night out.
“Plus, it’s always fun to get dressed up,” he says.
The Polar Bear Gala takes place Saturday, May 11, starting at 5pm. Tickets are $75 each.
